PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - The organization that helps provide housing for indigent families in St. Lucie County recently was itself the recipient of much needed habitat assistance.

St. Lucie Habitat for Humanity had outgrown its offices on Okeechobee Road in Fort Pierce when a generous benefactor offered the organization a building twice the size of its current location with a monthly mortgage payment that was half the rent it was paying.

However, there was one problem: the building, which was built in the 1950's and at various times was a residence, dentist office and chiropractic center, needed extensive work before the Habitat staff could move in.

When he learned this, Tim Mehaffey, owner of Mehaffey Construction Group, Inc., volunteered his firm's time and resources to perform the needed work at no charge, including construction management, installing new sheet rock, spackling, painting and other services. As a result, the Habitat staff will move to its new quarters at 702 6th St. far ahead of the anticipated move-in date.

"The entire project was moving very slowly until Tim and his crew arrived on the scene," noted Al Rivett, Habitat's Executive Director. "Once they started, the pace of remodeling moved with lightening speed, and our eight offices are now close to completion," he added.

Rivett also credited Habitat board member Yvonne Dudley with playing a major role in helping to secure the new offices.

Habitat for Humanity projects have become a Mehaffey family affair. In addition to assisting with the organization's new offices, Tim Mehaffey and his son Christopher, 20, are helping to build a house in Fort Pierce that Habitat will offer to a local family in need.

The Mehaffeys are working with students from John Carroll High School -Christopher's Alma mater-to complete a three-bedroom, 1,200 square-foot house that is scheduled to be completed by the end of the current school year.

"Even though he's currently attending college, Christopher still has strong ties to his high school and its staff. When he heard about the Habitat project, he volunteered to help immediately. Seeing that kind of concern for others inspired me to get involved as well, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience," Tim Mehaffey asserted.

Founded in 1995, St. Lucie Habitat for Humanity is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to providing decent, affordable homes for low and very-low income families in St. Lucie County. To date, the group has built a total of 27 homes throughout St. Lucie County.

With offices in Port St. Lucie, FL, Mehaffey Construction Group, Inc. is one of the region's leading building contractors. The company currently is making preparations to move into new offices in St. Lucie West that will double the size of their current facility.

Toys For Tots

Mehaffey Construction Group, Inc. is very proud of its association with the 2008 Campaign of Toys for Tots, a program sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. 01/08/2009

The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children.

Over the last 62 years, Marines have distributed more than 370 million toys to more than 173 million needy children. This charitable endeavor has made U.S. Marines the unchallenged leaders in looking after needy children at Christmas. Over its life span, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has supplemented local toy collections with more than 70.2 million toys valued at more than $387 million; plus has provided promotion and support materials valued at over $4.7 million.

The management and staff of Mehaffey Construction Group, Inc. is extraordinarily proud of its association with this outstanding effort. And we are grateful to the men and women who serve in the U.S Marine Corps, which has proudly defended this country since its founding in 1775.
